The Messenger of The Lord

Who was the Messenger of The Lord in Daniel Ch. 10

Behold the sovereign mercy of the Lord:               Scripture reference:

Read Daniel ch 10:1-21

(The Messenger of the Lord)

The Archangel Michael has been assigned to defend Israel (Daniel 12:1). But there is a problem…Israel’s continual and willful acts of disobedience and iniquity, have created a barrier between them and The Lord (Isaiah 59:1-2), which has left them as prey for Satan, the prince of this world.

So, do Michael and his legion of angels actually have any legal right to defend Israel?…

By God’s own Law, Israel have put themselves under a curse - a curse that gives Persia, Greece and any kingdom that comes afterwards, the right to wipe them off the face of the Earth (Psalm 83:1-4)

But…there is One who stands beside Michael (ch.11:1)- “One who looks like a man”…One who “stands in the gap”, against what must have been a constant barrage of accusations…The One who will provide the Sacrifice to end all sacrifices … whose blood, when poured out onto the earth, will break all curses and silence every accusation. (Revelation 12:7-9)

See Daniel 10:4-10…

Is this One Jesus? (Read Revelation 1:10-19) No one else has an appearance like this: Bronze in the Old Testament symbolizes judgment; Burnished bronze, symbolic of judgment complete…a life refined through fire.

Burnished bronze is a color that no one else can bare except Jesus…on the hands - as a powerful pointer as to how he will suffer…and on the feet - as a reminder to us that although we have sinned…He has overcome our sin. (Genesis 3:15; Romans 16:20)

***The Bronze Altar of the tabernacle (Numbers16:37-40) and the bronze snake on a pole (Numbers21:6-9) both are foreshadowing the Cross of Christ***

Hear the words of Jesus, to Peter in Luke 22:31-32…“Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have PRAYED (fought) for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.”

So in this chapter, appearing in form as a man, the pre-incarnate Christ stands in the gap, as a restrainer between Israel and the judgement which they deserved…And there is one very specific reason why…

…why God will allow neither the Prince of Persia, nor Greece, nor Rome, nor “Mystery Babylon” itself (ref.Daniel 2:31-45) to completely destroy Israel…

Because from out of Israel will come Messiah - the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin, not just of Israel, but the entire world. It was for this reason Israel was born (Isaiah 11) and why it still exists today (Daniel 9:24). The place where Messiah will be sacrificed, resurrected and ascend triumphantly is the same place to which he will return to rule and reign in the Earth (see Psalm 87)

Looking at Daniel 10:12-13…

So what kind of battle is this?

It seems to be a legal one: with the Prince of Persia as the prosecutor. But a pre-incarnate Jesus stands as a guarantor that a Sacrifice will be made for Israel…and Blood that speaks “Mercy” will be shed…and not only for them, but the whole world. (Romans 3:25-26)

In Zechariah ch.3 we see a very similar scenario; where Satan the accuser of the brethren is rebuked by the Angel of the Lord, whom most scholars agree to be the pre-incarnate Christ (the Hebrew word for angel - ‘malak’ meaning “messenger”)

Zechariah 3:1 “Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel (Messenger) of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?”

3 Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. 4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” (See John 11:44) And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” (No one but Christ Himself can do this) 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” (Compare Matthew 27:29) So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord (the pre-incarnate Christ) was standing by.”

This is a beautiful picture of how, when we receive the Sacrifice of Messiah, he washes us whiter than snow and adorns us with priestly garments (1Peter2:9)

And there is still more: Joshua himself - whose name in Hebrew is Yeshua and in Greek is Jesus (The LORD is Salvation) - stands as a type and shadow of Yeshua the Messiah…our High Priest who will, not only offer the perfect lamb, but will BECOME the perfect Lamb, and take upon His own priestly garments, the filth of our sin. (John 1:29; 2Cor.5:21)
