The Spirit of The Lord is upon Me
Luke4:18-19... “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor...”
Jesus, as he stands to read in the synagogue, is quoting from Isaiah 61. Before reaching the final component of this prophesy however, Jesus stops, roles up the scroll and sits down to teach; He begins with this statement: “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
Compare Luke 4:18-19 with Isaiah 61:1-2
So why did Jesus leave off this one final component?...
Because the time for God’s vengeance had not yet come...
...Because Jesus had come as the sacrifice of Genesis 22:8:- The Lamb that the LORD Himself would provide;
...As the Messiah of Isaiah 53:-To bare our griefs and carry our sorrows; to give His life as an offering for sin;
...As the Good Shepherd of John10:11-18:- Who seeks out and saves the lost, and lays down His life for the sheep;
...As the lowly king of Zecharia 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Donkeys and mules were traditionally used by kings during periods of peace. Messiah’s first coming was neither on mule or donkey, but on a donkey’s foal...the ultimate expression of humility and meekness...like a lamb to the slaughter...to bring the ultimate expression of peace - not to the earth (Matt10:34-36)... but peace between God and man(Luke2:14)... peace to the soul.
His second coming will NOT be so.
Revelation 19:11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. (See Isaiah 63:1-4; John1:1) 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
***To refuse to embrace Jesus’s first coming (mercy), means we will be forced to face Him at His second (Judgement). The choice is ours - Joshua24:15***
Back to Isaiah ch. 61:3-11
The time for God’s vengeance has not yet come...
but it will - and as we read in the remaining part of this chapter, it will come with the true repentance and final restoration for the remnant people of Israel, in the millennial reign of Christ from Jerusalem.Luke4:18-19...
