Psalm 141
#psalmsofdavid
Psalm 141 O Lord, I call upon you; hasten to me!
Give ear to my voice when I call to you!
***An urgent cry for deliverance, from a perverse and corrupt generation (Acts2:40; Revelation 18). David knows only too well the seductive power of sin.***
vs.2 Let my prayer be counted as incense before you,
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!
***The evening Sacrifice (Luke 23:44-46): A beautiful picture of Jesus Christ on the cross…and the incense that arose from his offering (Ephesians 5:2).***
vs.3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth;
keep watch over the door of my lips!
***“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.” In James ch. 3 we are given some very accurate and effective examples of the power of the tongue…to either open a door to sin…or close it.
(Read James 3:1-11)***
vs.4 Do not let my heart incline to any evil,
to busy myself with wicked deeds
in company with men who work iniquity,
and let me not eat of their delicacies!
(Proverbs 1:10-19)
***With great stealth and subtlety, evil is able to camouflage itself into the workings of good.***
vs.5 Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness;
let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head;
let my head not refuse it.
***In other words- ”If I must be struck, let it be from a righteous man…for my own good”. So earnestly David desires to see righteousness in the land, that he is willing to humble himself and endure chastening from the very people he presides over…
Sound familiar? See Philippians 2:6-8***
vs.5 Yet my prayer is continually AGAINST their evil deeds.
***He looks for a righteous man…but there is no one. David’s heart is torn, because he finds himself praying against his own people, rather than for them.
The state of David’s heart here, is why he is a man after God’s own heart (see Matt 23:37)***
vs.6 When their judges are thrown over the cliff,
THEN they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.
vs.7 As when one plows and breaks up the earth,
so shall our bones be scattered at the mouth of Sheol.
(And yet…see Ezekiel 37:1-14)
***David is able to endure the hardships of the present, because his hope is in something else…far into the future…at the renewal of all things, when once again Jerusalem will become the holy mountain, that is higher than all other mountains…where all nations of the earth will flow to learn the Ways of the Lord…and where David will preside as prince over his people, under his “descendant” The Lord Yeshua haMashiach (Jesus Christ).
See: Ezekiel ch.34:23-24; 37:24-25***
So again, why is David a man after God’s heart?
Because of this👇
vs.8 But my eyes are toward YOU, O God, my Lord;
in YOU I seek refuge; leave me not defenseless
His trust is not in himself…nor in any man: David’s trust is in God. This is why he can confidently pray…
vs.9 Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me
and from the snares of evildoers!
vs.10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
while I pass by safely.
