Psalm 142

 #biblestudy #psalmsofdavid

A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A Prayer.

Psalm 142 With my voice I cry out to the Lord;

    with my voice I plead for mercy to the Lord.

vs.2 I pour out my complaint before him;

    I tell my trouble before him.

**It is so important that in times of hardship, we trust the Lord enough to let him in. Just like Hezekiah (Isaiah 37:9-20) David will not hide his anguish, but will spread his complaint out right in front of the Lord (Psalm 139:7-12)***

vs.3 When my spirit faints within me,

    you know my way! (Psalm 139:1-6)

In the path where I walk

    they have hidden a trap for me.

***See Psalm 23:4-6 ….years later David will more fully comprehend the goodness and faithfulness of God: Not just that He was able to save him from Saul…but that HE IS ABLE to Save completely!…

And David will acknowledge this, in writing, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, in one of the most famous Psalms of them all - Psalm 23.***

But for now…

vs.4 Look to the right and see:

    there is none who takes notice of me;

no refuge remains to me;

    no one cares for my soul.

***Under the relentless persecution of Saul, with his back literally against a wall, we see that David’s only hope is in the Lord:

If this were not so, David would be looking elsewhere for help.***

However…

5 I cry to YOU, O Lord;

    I say, “YOU are my refuge,

    my portion in the land of the living.”

*** In other words: You are ALL I need in this life***

(Also Psalm 27:12-13)

6 Attend to my cry,

    for I am brought very low!

Deliver me from my persecutors,

    for they are too strong for me!

***Since the very beginning, (from the Israelites trying to enter the Promised Land, to the choosing of the 12 disciples), the people of the Lord, have always been outgunned, outnumbered, outsized, outclassed and pretty much outdone in every NATURAL way.

Why…?

See Judges 7:2;  And also…

2Corinthians12:8-9

***Like the Apostle Paul, when we think of David, we have a tendency to think of greatness…We forget that, in their natural selves, both David and Paul were as weak and fallible as any man…

And it was this very weakness that drove both of them into the cleft of the Rock that was higher.***

7 Bring me out of prison,

    that I may give thanks to your name!

The righteous will surround me,

    for you will deal bountifully with me.

That time is coming…

Matthew 27:50-53;

Acts 2:22-36

Ezekiel 44:1-3
